July 4th

Happy 4th, everyone near and far. Though if you are an expat in Poland you will be decidedly un-American and watch the World Cup. While we're on that topic, way to go ABC. NBC is showing the women's quarterfinals at Wimbledon; where's the soccer action? Not everyone has cable. My sources tell me that the money's on Germany but the emotional favorite is Portugal.

Did the parade this morning as usual. These nerds, oh sorry, musicians are one of my perennial favorites. I don't know how they manage to escape from Valleyfair every year.

This is a new one this year. If you can't read the sign it's Edina Election Judges on Parade.

I'm not so sure this is P.C., but if you're 80 and a Shriner, who the hell cares.

Each year this parade disappoints a little more. When we first started going nine years ago it was a cute, local, small-time parade--pretty much anyone who had an antique car. One year a set of identical twins in their seventies signed up to participate. That was it, just them walking down the street. The two lamest participants this year were the Schwan's truck--just the truck, not even giving out samples--and the Icelandic horse drill team, which didn't do anything except crap on the street and not clean it up. Though it was somewhat entertaining to watch the rest of the parade avoid the piles--which they did successfully.

The party we're going to tonight has been billed as a "Pyro show." I am so there.
