Patriotic blood?

Last Tuesday I gave blood for the first time ever. I'm not afraid of being stuck--if the weekly allergy shots didn't get me over that it would have been the monthly blood-lettings at my pregnancy checkups. No, my petite size and anemia as a young adult disqualified me at that time and somehow it just never dawned on me to go for it until our school held a blood drive last week. My blood is slow. The technician was even getting impatient. She was trying every trick in the book to get it to come out faster. The good news is, my blood pressure is down: 110/70--a complete mystery.

Well, whoever gets that blood is gettin' some bona fide patriot blood. My cousin's husband e-mailed me last week with the information that we have an ancestor who has been proven to be a Revolutionary War veteran. To my knowledge, that's the only U.S. war any of my progenitors have ever fought in. So Happy Memorial Day to you!

URGENT

What would you think if this arrived in your mailbox under the subject heading "Urgent"?

If anyone was in the vicinity of the argument between two parents after this afternoon's (May 10th) music program, please call Mr. B******* [the school principal] as soon as possible. His home telephone number is...

I still don't know what really happened. The following morning another parent and I were speculating about what might have happened. Another parent, who I would normally describe as "mousy", overheard us and said, "I was one of the involved parties." She then declined to tell us what happened. That afternoon we got an e-mail from the principal:

Yesterday's e-mail was an attempt on my part to identify a witness to the argument between two parents after the music concert. I didn't mean to alarm the community. The issue between the parents has been resolved.

I guess by "resolved" he means that a girl in Katherine's class--the "mousy" woman's daughter--has moved to a different class for the rest of the year. Yikes.

Is it May already?

Back when I first wrote about the middle school orientation it seemed like forever away. Well, it was last night. Nothing earth shattering, just all us parents trying to get our heads around the fact that our kids will be teens sooner rather than later. Katherine's main worry is that she's going to get lost. I know everything will be fine, but I understand where she's coming from. This is the real deal--changing rooms for every class. Was it really just yesterday that she came out of my womb. Yes it was.

Tigers are awesome

This year's science fair entry: Tiger Extinction. A few parental suggestions were made. I'm not sure if you can make it out, but one of the six ways you can help tigers is to have a tiger lemonade stand this summer.

I hate my Cub

I know hate is a pretty strong word. But going to Cub, for me, is like entering a world of anarchy. I'd say about 5% of the other shoppers seem to have no consideration for the rest of us--way to much for me. And could you tell me what grocery store in it's right mind would undertake a massive restocking--including completely blocking two aisles--at 5:30 in the afternoon? Never again, Cub. Never again. I will continue to gladly pay 10% more at my regular grocery store to chat with George the carryout about cross-country skiing.

Even exchange?

Does walking to the grocery store and back make up for eating an entire container of cottage cheese as potato chip dip?
