Like I said, I'm easily impressed

O.K., so that was one of the coolest things ever. I just spent 45 minutes on a webcam phone call with Tom and Ildi--for free on Skype!!!

Wedding Weekend: Day 3--Preparations

The bride's mother arranged to have a hairdresser at the hotel. It was pretty expensive, but I had her do my hair and Katherine's if nothing else but to reduce my stress levels. Ildi cracking open a bottle of wine from their minibar for her, my mom, and me to share also helped.

The little dude getting ready!

Check out this 'do. It held for 13+ hours...
(photo courtesy Ildi, and by the way I did wear this dress)

I just wanted to crash when we got back to our hotel, but when I lied down all these hairpins poked me in the back of my head.

Check it out, TK => I already know more Hungarian than Polish :P

The village of Neohorio

These are the kind of people that are affected: the 80-something neighbor, Gregorio, making a broom out of twigs and straw. (Sorry for the blur--low light conditions)

Greek Wildfires

We were away for the weekend, so I didn't hear about the wildfires until this morning. They are reporting that the area around Zaharo, a town on the Peloponnese, is one of the hardest hit. My college advisor's summer home is 3 miles south of Zaharo and where I lived for several weeks while working in Greece.

If turning 40 weren't bad enough...

Katherine got her latest issue of American Girl magazine yesterday. They have a little blurb about the release of the latest "historical" doll. It's Julie from the 1970s. So my age has been classified as "historical." See if they get any more of my money. ;)

Wedding Weekend: Day 2

Sightseeing. (This is the bean from Millennium Park.) And of course the American Girl Store.

Wedding Weekend: Day 1

It was just all too much. William fell asleep with his head in my lap during the Groom's dinner. Fortunately there was a little couch for him to crash on. Ildi covered him up with a little tablecloth.

The hot gossip for the day was that Brad & Angelina had checked into the Peninsual Hotel--where the wedding reception was to be held and where Tom and Ildi were staying.

It's official...

The most overused word for 2007: bespoke [custom-made].

Will wonders never cease

I have just discovered the world of instant messaging and I have to say that I am impressed with it. I must be pretty easily dazzled, huh? I have heard tell of a device that actually allows you to speak with others at long distances.... I think I just like the casualness of i.m., it doesn't have to take on the event status of a transcontinental phone call. Maybe I can get some tips from Katherine, who has been "chatting" on her club penguin account since we got high speed. (Though I did have to look up "NMU"--that's not much, you--for her.) TTFN

If anyone knows how to retrieve deleted files from a Mac, please let me know.

Coincidence or not?

When I logged in to flickr tonight, this greeted me:

Szia fizzyliz!
Now you know how to greet people in Hungarian!

I might be a little freaked.

Not our first trip to the ER

So as not to gross anyone out, I'll just show this photo. Mr. W has five stitches after cutting his chin on the bottom of the swimming pool. Six-year-old boys do not like the idea of stitches. When I told him we would have to go to the doctor he started crying, "I don't want to get stitches. I don't want to get stitches."-- just like his friend who cut his foot at a track meet a few weeks ago. Alas, six-year-old boys were made for stitches. Their bravado outweighs the caution that normally prevents the rest of us from getting into stitches-potential situations. William's first trip to the ER was at 11 months--stitches then too after an ambulatory accident. Good thing this one didn't happen before the wedding.

Egesegedre!

That's "cheers" in Hungarian.

Finally recuperating from the "big weekend," i.e. the wedding.

This morning:
[Some background--my other brother Tom and his Hungarian girlfriend Ildi live in Warsaw.]

Katherine: I want to meet Ildi's kids. But we wouldn't be able to talk to each other.

Me: You'll have to learn Hungarian.

Katherine: Hungarian is my new language instead of Spanish.

Me: How do you think Tom will feel about you learning Hungarian instead of Polish?

Katherine: They're the same, aren't they?

It kinda ruined our evening

The kids were at the in-laws for the night so Paul and I were in the kitchen watching the news and discussing what we should do. There was a little blurb before the weather: "35W...bridge...collapse" then a few minutes later, the horrific images. This tragedy is terrible on so many levels. This morning they interviewed a girl who had been on the school bus on the bridge. She is a girl from Katherine's class.
